About Me

We stand in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and the rest of the 99% throughout our country and the world. We stand in protest of the greed and corruption of our government and the 1% who bankroll them. We are striving to affect change locally by raising awareness through marches, sit-ins, and other non-violent tactics, as well as through social outreach.

Event Schedule and Reminders for Tomorrow

Today, we are just one day away from the 2nd Occupy Martinsburg rally here in Martinsburg. Just wanted to give a schedule of updates for tomorrow.
First, we pray that tomorrows rally will be as peaceful as a week ago, but as pictures and videos have shown, we do not know what will be in store for us tomorrow.
Peace and Stay Safe and be Alert and Vigilant to surroundings around us especially if we are going to move around as a group.
Taken from the
"On Oct 22nd there will be another event happening in downtown Martinsburg. It's the chili cook-off, someone suggested we move around Martinsburg as a group.

Things to consider:

1. Do not disrupt the chili cook-off.
2. Do not use vulgar language.
3. Do not use obscene gestures."

If you haven't did so yet, please read the Info from here:
Important Info If You Plan To Attend
I did want to share some information I recently heard that they do not mirandarize anymore when arresting someone. Does anyone have any info on that. Please share in the comments.

FROM THE MEDIA GROUP:
The live stream is up on the Internet here:
Occupy Martinsburg Live Stream
We are hoping that any glitches will be worked out early enough as tomorrow will be the first real testing of this. Hopefully a few techies will be there just in case we need a little help in getting this online.
Anyone else with video camera's who want to add video to the live stream, we are trying to figure this out also.
Anyone participating in the event tomorrow if they wish not to comment, please be kind and say so if you are approached with the video camera. No one will force you to speak if you do not wish to.
Please remember that this will be live (we are hoping) and have been trying this week to figure out a way that anyone wishing to speak out but remain anonymous can do so. You are free to say anything you wish to the camera.
If there are any other groups who wish to put any reminders on here, please Facebook message me and will add group reminders.
Also This was posted on the Group Facebook Page:
Just a reminder: Currently we will be having our General Assembly every Saturday at the Voters Registration annex across from the library. 12 p.m.
Bring ideas, smiles, and most importantly bring a friend! We've got lots to talk about on Saturday, and if everyone wants to perhaps we could march! Yes?

A Few OWS News Articles That Are Out:
Not OWS News, but really worth a mention is:
Occupy’ Protesters Take to the Streets in W.Va.
A new petition was also added today. It is  Promote Accuracy and Accountability in Political Speeches/Campaigns (and is in the petitions list on the side bar)
Any other ideas? Please leave in the comment section.

"What's Happening Today (10/20/11)

Hoping those from the group that went to DC yesterday had a safe day.
Occupy Martinsburg is growing. I believe that more people support it, but in ways that are private. This just from talking to people. Occupy Together is starting to grow as well in numbers as it reached 213.
Heard overnight that the Occupy New Hampshire group were served summons yesterday for "failure to disperse" as an act of civil disobedience.
Isn't it funny that the Government fails to act in accordance with the Constitution, but inflicts it onto the citizens in this country.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
I also found a very good documentary that is worth watching. I saw this awhile back, and it replayed last night. This video documents the birth of the Global Economic Crisis.
In the very beginning of the video is this statement made by Wall St.:
"LET'S HOPE WE ARE ALL WEALTHY AND RETIRED BY THE TIME THIS HOUSE OF CARDS FALTERS."- Internet e-Mail Wall St. 12/15/2006
The documentary is called:The House of Cards.
It is about an hour and a half long. After watching it again last night on CNBC I noticed the following: That in the first seven minutes of watching the video, there are protesters on Wall St. as early as the making of this documentary.
I got carried away earlier and at one point had vented a few personal political views of my own. I did remove them from here on the basis that my own political views are that of my own and are not shared by others. No one asked me to remove them, but I made a decision to.
A few good reads I found for today is
A Letter to the #Occup(iers): The principle of Non-contradiction
From the Occupy Martinsburg Facebook Group:
Marlene Azoulai says: "The Democratic party, through organizations such as MoveOn.org is trying to co-opt the Movement. This will not happen. I used to support MoveOn and no longer do. Actually, I am very disappointed in them. The Rebuild The American Dream organization is connected with the Democratic party and Moveon is taking donations, saying that they are connected to the Occupation. They are not. The two-party system no longer works. It is broken beyond being able to be fixed. That is what the Occupation is about. The creation of a new system of government, which operates on the basis of consensus and an awareness of diversity, human needs and justice. Too big a vision? It's your choice. Stay with the old that doesn't work anymore or take the leap of faith into working together to create a new paradigm.
This is an excellent article by Chris Hedges on the subject of the co-opting of the Movement."

Very nice statement Marlene and very good article (link)below. Thanks for sharing with the group. I personally think that alot of people are blinded as to what is truly happening in this country, in our State and in our community.

If you come across the OWS Working Group List of Demands

Important Info For Anyone Planning to Attend (PLEASE READ)

Just thought I'd pass along some info that was shared for anyone wishing to attend:
1. Do not carry anything that can be construed as a weapon. If carrying protest signs, use cardboard or plastic tubes rather than wooden poles. Carry ID in case of arrest (most people arrested at such events are released on their own recognizance and 99% of the cases self-destruct when they reach the courts).
2. Do not block pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Do not trespass on private property.
3. If arrested, shout your name repeatedly so others around you will know whose case they are witnessing. Do not resist arrest. If you wish to be arrested to make a political statement, inform law enforcement in advance if feasible.
4. If you see someone being arrested, get names, take notes, get photos with your cell phone camera.
5. Obey the instructions of law enforcement. If you think they are exceeding their lawful authority, get names, take notes, get photos with your cell phone camera.
6. If engaged by people who may disagree with your message or stance, discuss the issues with them if you think they are interested in serious discussion. If they just want to insult or hassle you, ignore them if possible. If not, remain courteous as you move away from them.
7. The ACLU will very likely defend anyone arrested for they typical trespassing, blocking traffic or unlawful assembly charges or for engaging in peaceful civil disobedience. The phone number is 304-345-9246. If there is an infringement on your legal rights of peaceful assembly and protest, the ACLU will likely take that up in the courts at a later time.
Also: Remember Martinsburg has a policy of No Hoods or Masks

"Occupy Martinsburg, WV 1st Protest 10/15/2011"

Approximately 100 people came out on Saturday, Oct 15, 2011 to show their support for the Occupy Martinsburg Movement and participated in the protest event here in Martinsburg, WV
We are the 99%
There were a few shouts of displeasure, but overall it was a nice day and and everyone felt that they did their best to get the word out that
We will not stay silent...
Many are asking but why Occupy Martinsburg?
Why not? We are tired of the political greed, while our citizens suffer. WVa ranks one of the highest in this country for poverty. Though people turn their backs and ignore it, homelessness in Martinsburg is growing. Adults and children in our community are going to bed hungry every night.
If the politicians in power cared WVa would not have the statistics that it has, they would be doing something for this state.
Where are the Jobs? Politicians are doing nothing. So it's time to speak out against the turned backs of politicians, the greed in Washington, on Wall St. and say
WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!
Everyone has their own reasons for getting and being involved. This is not about any one political party (as is being assumed)by the uninformed general public. We are all the 99%.
The Martinsburg movement is above just holding protests and rally's, we want to help give back to this community in many ways by holding fund raisers.
Planned fund raisers include: Clothing drives, a food drive, collecting blankets, coats, hats, and winter weather clothing for the homeless.
If you are a church or organization even a private citizen who would like to help by participating, please send an email to:
Also if you would like to make a donation in support, private donations can be sent to: Occupy Martinsburg c/o:Jan Brosario (info coming soon)In the meantime, if you would like more information on how you can help, please contact the email address above and your emails will be directed to the proper sources.
